ATU Students Gain Global Insight Through European Study Abroad Program

Arkansas Tech University (ATU) students recently enhanced their educational journey by participating in a study abroad program to London, England, and Paris, France, following the conclusion of the spring 2025 semester.

Students Mars Carter of Arkadelphia, Neiah Denney of Lavaca, Lizbeth Flores and Carlee Gray of Dardanelle, and Willow Passmore of Greers Ferry experienced firsthand the impact of viewing some of the world’s most iconic artworks in person, a stark contrast to merely seeing them in photographs.

“Being able to see both the scale and minute details is important to fully understand the impact of the paintings and sculptures,” said Jessica Mongeon, associate professor in ATU’s Department of Art, who accompanied the group. “They also learned about the history of each city and country and how the art and architecture relate to that history. It’s an immersive experience where they get to be part of a different culture for a while.”

During their stay in London, the students toured notable sites such as Windsor Castle, the Tate Modern art gallery, and The National Gallery. In Paris, their itinerary included the recently restored Notre Dame Cathedral and the Louvre Museum, where they viewed masterpieces including Leonardo da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa.” The trip also featured a visit to Giverny, France, to explore the home and gardens of renowned painter Claude Monet.

“The flowers were beautiful, and we saw the water lily pond and bridge that inspired Monet’s paintings,” Mongeon added.

The ATU Office of Study Abroad underscores its mission to broaden students’ global perspectives and foster responsible global citizenship through programs like these. During the 2024-25 academic year, 55 ATU students participated in study abroad and study away programs, supported by $83,500 in scholarships funded by the ATU Foundation via the Miller Center for Global Engagement.

“I believe study abroad increases student engagement,” Mongeon said. “Once they experience these places, they want to learn more and travel more. It builds their confidence in navigating new environments, from ordering food to using public transit, and helps them envision their future after graduation as global citizens ready to explore the world.”

This immersive study abroad experience offers valuable cultural and educational growth, reinforcing ATU’s commitment to expanding global learning opportunities for its students.
