Germany remains a steadfast and welcoming destination for Indian students, said German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann, amidst increasing global visa restrictions that have disrupted international student mobility.
Speaking at a press conference in Delhi on June 10, Ambassador Ackermann emphasized Germany’s consistency in supporting international students. “We are not erratic, we are not volatile, we are very, very steady,” he remarked, contrasting Germany’s approach with tightening policies in countries like the UK, Canada, and the USA. He also underscored Germany’s non-intrusive visa process, stating, “We don’t check social media before you come.”
Rising Indian Enrollment in Germany
Germany now ranks fifth among global destinations for Indian students choosing to study abroad, following Canada, the USA, the UK, and Australia. The number of Indian students enrolled in German universities has risen dramatically—from 13,740 in 2015–16 to 49,483 in 2023–24—according to Katja Lasch, Director of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Regional Office in New Delhi.
Germany’s public university system is another draw. Most institutions charge low or no tuition fees, making it one of the most affordable options among top study abroad programs. “If they charge, the fee is rather limited,” Ackermann noted.
Additionally, Lasch highlighted that Germany offers over 2,300 study programmes in English. However, proficiency in German is considered advantageous, particularly for students aiming to join the country’s workforce after graduation.
Career Pathways and Job Market Access
Germany’s strong demand for skilled workers—especially in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields—adds further incentive for Indian students. “Those who have graduated from German universities have a greater chance of joining the labour market,” Ackermann said, encouraging Indian students to tap into the country’s broad career opportunities.
Guidance for Students
The ambassador also advised Indian students to avoid expensive recruitment agents. “Go individually for the choice of universities. It is easy, and the websites are good,” he recommended, urging students to rely on trusted study abroad guides and official resources to make informed decisions.
As international education faces mounting challenges, Germany’s consistent and open approach reinforces its position as a reliable and attractive destination for Indian students seeking global academic and career opportunities.
