St. John’s University is equipping students to thrive in a globalized world through its signature Cultural Mentorship Program (CMP), a core part of its study abroad guides and initiatives. The program, offered by the Office of International Education, provides students with an immersive framework to prepare for and engage deeply with new cultures during their study abroad programs.
CMP goes beyond traditional travel preparation by fostering cultural reflection, adaptability, and growth. It equips students with vital skills to navigate cultural differences, develop intercultural communication, and embrace diversity, all within the context of St. John’s Catholic and Vincentian traditions.
“St. John’s Study Abroad provided me with a unique experience that many students at other universities do not have,” said Gianna Ferriso, a third-year education student. “CMP, combined with my semester abroad in Rome, helped me grow academically, professionally, and personally.”
The program starts on the Queens, NY, campus with predeparture activities and continues online for visiting students, laying a strong foundation for sessions abroad. Orientation sessions are held before departure, followed by reflective group meetings led by local staff at St. John’s global sites in Rome, Paris, and Limerick throughout the semester.
In addition to cultural discussions, students have the option to join weekly small-group language tutoring to better immerse themselves in their host country’s language.
“The Cultural Mentorship Program helps study-abroad students feel more prepared and supported as they enter new cultural spaces,” said Bianca Sylvain, Assistant Director of Outbound Services. “It offers tailored support, cultural tips, and a safe space for open dialogue.”
CMP encourages students to build cultural awareness and community, inspiring meaningful academic and personal development during their time abroad.
Gianna Ferriso assists other students in understanding cultural dynamics abroad and emphasizes the program’s role in maximizing the study-abroad experience. Emily Blickhahn, a Global Ambassador and third-year education student, adds that the program provides essential advice on everything from packing to managing academics and coping with cultural adjustment.
“An abroad experience can be intimidating, but CMP helps students feel confident and ready to embrace one of the best experiences of their lives,” Blickhahn said.
St. John’s University is a national leader in international engagement, with approximately 40 percent of undergraduates participating in study abroad programs ranging from short-term trips to semester-long stays. The university also welcomes over 700 international students from nearly 100 countries.
