Indian Students Shift Preferences Towards Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai for Higher Education

by Daisy

The landscape of international education is undergoing a significant shift, with Indian students increasingly opting for alternative study-abroad destinations. According to a recent report by Gradding.com, a platform dedicated to study-abroad guidance, there has been a notable 38% rise in the number of Indian students choosing countries like Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai. This trend highlights a growing interest in these regions, driven by factors such as quality education, affordable living costs, and attractive job opportunities post-graduation.

Traditionally, the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia have been the top destinations for Indian students. However, these countries are now seeing a decline in popularity. The Indian government recently revealed that the overall number of students studying abroad fell by nearly 15% in 2024 compared to the previous year. Among the largest declines, Canada saw a 41% drop, followed by 27.7% in the UK and 13% in the US. In contrast, Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai have experienced a surge in demand, signaling a shift in global study preferences.

The change in direction can be attributed to various factors, including stricter visa policies, evolving immigration laws, and the dynamic nature of global higher education. Indian students are increasingly seeking destinations that align with both their academic goals and career aspirations. In 2023, the number of Indian students studying abroad rose from 750,365 in 2022 to 892,989, with Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai emerging as increasingly popular choices.

Factors Behind the Decline in Traditional Destinations

The downturn in student numbers for countries like the US, UK, and Canada is largely due to tightening post-study visa rules and restrictions on work opportunities. Nations like Australia and Canada have implemented stricter immigration policies, which have created barriers for students seeking long-term career opportunities after completing their studies. The restrictions on dependent visas and post-study work opportunities have left many students uncertain about their future prospects, further deterring them from choosing these countries.

The Rise of Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai

On the other hand, countries such as Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai are becoming increasingly attractive for Indian students. These nations offer high-quality education at relatively affordable prices, with institutions that rank among the best globally. Singapore, for instance, has seen a remarkable 25% year-on-year growth in Indian student enrollment. To illustrate, if 10,000 Indian students enrolled in Singapore a few years ago, that number grew to over 12,500 in 2023.

Government policies and strategic partnerships between universities and businesses in these regions have also contributed to the rise in demand for graduates in fields such as finance, technology, and healthcare. These sectors offer ample career opportunities for students, enhancing the appeal of these destinations.

A Changing Global Education Landscape

“The preferences of Indian students are undergoing a profound transformation, as they become more discerning about their choices for higher education. Countries like Singapore, Ireland, and Dubai are emerging as prime destinations due to their affordable education, excellent academic institutions, and strong career prospects,” said Mamta Shekhawat, founder of Gradding.com.

With the 38% increase in Indian students pursuing education abroad, these emerging destinations are expected to continue gaining prominence. By making well-informed choices, students can leverage the unique opportunities presented by these countries, enhancing both their educational and career prospects on the global stage.
