JACKSON, TENN. – Nineteen students from Jackson State Community College (JSCC) have earned scholarships to study abroad this summer, with plans to travel to 10 countries, including Japan, Greece, Italy, Spain, Austria, France, Scotland, Ecuador, and more. This unique opportunity allows them to broaden their educational experience by immersing themselves in diverse cultures and historical sites.
Jackson State has built a reputation for making study abroad accessible to its students—an experience traditionally associated with four-year institutions. The college’s Global Learning program continues to expand, this year offering a total of $54,440 in scholarships to support students pursuing international education.
The selected students will spend three weeks overseas, earning college credit for one course while applying their classroom knowledge in the countries that inspired their studies.
Dr. Liz Mayo, Coordinator for Global Learning at JSCC, emphasized the transformative nature of the program. “Many of our students have never left the state before they board a plane with Jackson State to explore a foreign country,” she said. “By participating, they become international ambassadors, bringing back valuable perspectives to their communities in West Tennessee.”
Upon returning, each scholarship recipient is required to serve as an International Ambassador for JSCC. This role involves promoting the study abroad program by sharing personal experiences, travel journals, photos, and videos with their peers, enriching the college community’s understanding of global education.
The scholarships, which are made possible through Jackson State’s partnership with the Tennessee Consortium for International Studies (TnCIS), have specific eligibility requirements. Students must be at least 18 years old, enrolled full-time or part-time, have completed at least 12 college-level credit hours, meet minimum GPA standards, and undergo an interview process with the JSCC International Education Committee.
The students selected for the program are recognized for their academic achievements and commitment, as evidenced by their rigorous application, scholarship, and orientation processes. This year’s recipients represent a diverse group of individuals dedicated to making the most of this life-changing opportunity.
